Papua New Guinea Hospital Selects Varian Cancer Care Solution

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian (NYSE: VAR) today announced it was selected by Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) in Papua New Guinea to equip its cancer treatment center with the Halcyon radiotherapy system, as well as the ARIA® oncology information system and Eclipse™ treatment planning system. The Halcyon system simplifies and enhances virtually every aspect of image-guided volumetric intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), including improved patient comfort and shortening the time from installation to first-treatment without sacrificing quality. The systems are expected to be installed by October 2019.

The Halcyon system is well-suited to treat a majority of cancer patients, offering advanced treatments for lung, prostate, breast, head & neck, and many other forms of cancer. The radiotherapy system features a streamlined workflow that only requires nine steps from the start to the end of treatment compared to up to more than 30 steps with older technologies.

Eclipse software creates an optimized radiotherapy treatment plan based on a physician's prescription, and information about the size, shape, and location of the tumor to be treated with radiation. ARIA is a comprehensive electronic medical record and image management system that aggregates patient data into an organized, oncology-specific medical chart with functional components for managing clinical, administrative and financial operations for medical, radiation and surgical oncology.

"A key component to realizing our vision of a world without fear of cancer, is increasing access to advanced cancer care," said Kenneth Tan, president Asia Pacific, Varian. "We look forward to working closely with PMGH to install this cancer care system and make these advanced treatments available to the citizens of Papua New Guinea."

"We look forward to the installation of the Halcyon system and enabling cancer patients in Papua New Guinea to receive the required treatments without having to travel abroad," said Dr. Paki Molumi, director medical services, Port Moresby General Hospital.

"I am very pleased and satisfied that PMGH has taken the lead in providing this much needed service for our people," said Health and HIV Minister, Honorable Sir Dr. Puka Temu, who was present to witness the contract signing. "I congratulate Hospital Board Chairman Sir Theophilus G. Constantinou and his team on this milestone. This new service will help save lives of many who cannot not afford to go overseas or get private healthcare."

Varian booked the order for the equipment in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2019.
